IN 2004, a magical holiday was born. Shredders in California rejoiced when Rob Dyrdek and the International Association of Skateboard Companies concocted a holiday, Go Skateboarding Day, to celebrate (and promote) skating. Since then it’s spread like wildfire the world over. But, hey, let’s be real—I only care about what’s going on in Portland. So I’m here to tell you about a big ol’ skate jam that took place right outside Wieden + Kennedy’s offices in Northwest Portland on June 21.
Inside the office there was free beer and an art show by the James Jarvis—a British illustrator whose round skateboarding characters speak to me and my skating style. (And by that, I mean the li’l guy is hiding under the ramp instead of riding it.) You can check out some of his work in the background of the shots seen here. Special thanks to W+K for allowing a bunch of creeps into your building, and to Garrett Close who apparently put the whole thing together. (Big ups on pulling that party off, Garrett. Can you get Mr. Wieden to let us do it again next year? Or do you have to ask Mr. Kennedy?)
