ICYMI: Drama with the Springwater Corridor as Portland's largest-ever homeless sweep looms:
Advocates from local volunteer organizations like Boots on the Ground PDX, Free Hot Soup, Rose City Backpacks of Hope, and Portland Tenants United have called the morning meeting to discuss how to react to a decision they say lacks both humanity and logic: Eight days earlier, Mayor Charlie Hales revealed plans to eradicate camping on Portland’s swath of the Springwater trail for good beginning in early August—a massive sweep that is quite possibly the largest single enforcement action like it in the city’s history.
Yesterday afternoon, Mayor Charlie Hales announced he'd push back the sweep of Springwater Corridor until September: "A final straw in Hales' decision, then, seems to be a meeting Tuesday with representatives of the Oregon Law Center, which has repeatedly sued on behalf of homeless campers. Those representatives said they planned to file for an injunction if the mayor moved forward with the suit. They'd sent a demand letter to the city on July 22."

Portland State president Marinus "Wim" Wiewel will step down as president of Portland State University. In the Oregonian:
His resignation surprised even some university trustees. Wiewel, 66, had signed a new three-year contract 13 months ago. But in an interview Wednesday, he said after nine years on the job, it was time to go.
"Someone told me when I started here that this is not a job, it's a life," Wiewel said. "It's just been an amazing experience. But it's an exhausting position."
A new poll shows the two main gubernatorial candidates—Gov. Kate Brown and her Republican challenger, Bud Pierce—are essentially tied. Brown's technically up 1.4 percent, but that's within the survey's margin of error, the Oregonian reports.
Donald Trump still hasn't released his tax returns. "Now, at least two wealthy Hillary Clinton allies have put out a bounty for them,"Gawker writes, offering to donate a lot of money to charity if he does release them.
WikiLeaks, the group releasing hacked stuff from the Democratic National Committee, publicized "some boring-ass voicemails" of people calling the DNC.
